Boarding facilities we recommend

We only recommend these boarding facilities in Auckland because they meet the standards we expect for rabbit and Guinea pig care. Rabbits are very sensitive animals and require knowledgeable handling, the correct diet, and a safe environment. Unfortunately many traditional boarding facilities are not experienced with rabbits or guinea pigs, which can lead to stress or serious health risks. For this reason we strongly encourage owners to only use recommended facilities that understand rabbit welfare and have the experience to care for them properly while you are away.

What to ask when choosing a boarding facility for your family member

Transparency

Facilities should openly show all accommodation areas, both indoor and outdoor. Owners deserve to see exactly where their pets will be staying.

Space & Enrichment

Animals must have adequate space and enrichment, with opportunities for exercise and natural behaviours rather than being confined to small crates for most of the day. If facilities take on more than 12 animals, keep in mind this means they won’t get even an hour exercise a day. Some facilities are knows to take on over 50 with only one exercise area.

Diet & Daily Care

Rabbits and guinea pigs require constant access to quality hay and fresh daily greens. Facilities should clearly demonstrate they understand and provide the correct diet.

Experience With Exotic Animals

Rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and other small animals have very different needs to cats and dogs. We prioritise facilities with proven experience caring for these species.

Veterinary Awareness

Health issues should always be handled appropriately, with veterinary care sought when required. Boarding providers should understand the limits of what they can legally and safely do.

Environment & Safety

Accommodation should prioritise welfare, with clean, secure environments designed to reduce stress for sensitive animals.

Why choose The Bunny BnB?

Bunny BnB offers specialised boarding designed around rabbit and Guinea pig welfare. With only 9 enclosures, every rabbit and Guinea pig receives plenty of attention and hours of daily exercise time in one of their two large indoor runs.

Unlike many facilities, no rabbits are kept outdoors in hutches or confined to single crates. All accommodation is designed to prioritise comfort, safety and natural behaviours, full of enrichment.

Bunny BnB is run by Sophie, a qualified veterinary technician who has worked in both emergency veterinary clinics and alongside qualified exotic vets, giving her extensive experience in rabbit and Guinea pig health and care.

Rabbits and piggies also enjoy fresh greens grown in Sophie’s own bunny-safe garden, ensuring they receive the diet and enrichment they need while staying away from home.

Why choose the Animal Savvy Ltd?

Animal Savvy Ltd is an excellent boarding option for small animals, run by a qualified veterinary nurse with extensive hands-on experience caring for a wide range of species. With only six enclosures available, animals receive highly individualised care and attention rather than being one of many in a large facility. Their veterinary background means health, welfare, and early recognition of any issues are always a priority, giving owners extra peace of mind while their pets are away from home. The small numbers also allow for a calm, low-stress environment, ensuring each animal receives the time, monitoring, and enrichment they need.
